United Airlines Unveils Largest International Expansion, Adds Eight New Destinations

United Airlines has announced its largest international expansion to date, with service to eight new destinations across Europe, Africa, and Greenland. Starting in May 2025, this move significantly boosts United’s global network, providing travelers with new options for non-stop flights to unique and underserved markets from the airline’s hubs in Newark and Washington, D.C.

New Destinations from Newark

United’s expansion from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) will include five new routes, none of which are currently served by any other U.S. airline:

  • Nuuk, Greenland (GOH): United will be the first U.S. airline to offer direct flights to Greenland’s capital, marking a significant step in connecting travelers to one of the most remote parts of the world.
  • Palermo, Italy (PMO): Travelers can now explore the historic city of Palermo, a cultural and tourist hub on the island of Sicily.
  • Bilbao, Spain (BIO): Known for its architectural landmarks like the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao will provide a gateway to Spain’s Basque Country.
  • Faro, Portugal (FAO): Located in the Algarve region, Faro is a favorite destination for travelers seeking scenic coastlines and warm weather.
  • Madeira Island, Portugal (FNC): This lush island, famous for its stunning landscapes and wine, becomes more accessible with United’s new non-stop flights.

Expanding from Washington Dulles

From its Washington Dulles (IAD) hub, United is also launching three new routes:

  • Dakar, Senegal (DSS): United’s first year-round service to West Africa will connect travelers to the vibrant capital of Senegal.
  • Nice, France (NCE): A popular destination on the French Riviera, Nice will offer travelers easy access to Southern France’s Mediterranean coast.
  • Venice, Italy (VCE): This seasonal route will provide more options for travelers visiting Italy’s iconic canal city.

A Historic Expansion

This historic expansion reflects United’s commitment to growing its international footprint. With a focus on destinations that have seen increased interest and demand from U.S. travelers, United’s goal is to offer more choices to its customers for leisure and business travel. These new routes also provide U.S. travelers with easier access to unique and culturally rich destinations, many of which are not served by other major airlines.

United’s CEO Scott Kirby commented on the expansion, saying, “This is an exciting time for United as we continue to lead the industry in providing customers with the most comprehensive global network of any U.S. airline.”

Bottom line

With this significant expansion, United Airlines is poised to connect more travelers to new parts of the world, offering unique travel opportunities that cater to both adventure-seekers and business travelers alike. As United strengthens its international routes, passengers can expect more non-stop options and smoother connections to remote and popular destinations.
