Travelers in Northeast England will soon have a new connection to Europe as Newcastle Airport (NCL) announces the launch of direct flights to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). Starting May 1, 2025, the route will be operated by Eurowings, the low-cost subsidiary of Lufthansa Group, and will mark the only direct service between Newcastle and the German capital.
Route Details
The new service will operate twice weekly, providing passengers with convenient options for city breaks, business travel, and connecting flights through Berlin’s expanding network. Tickets for the route start at an affordable £44.99 one way, reflecting Eurowings’ commitment to offering competitive fares for budget-conscious travelers.
Flights will be conducted using Airbus A319 aircraft, which can accommodate up to 156 passengers in a single-class configuration. The schedule is designed to cater to both weekend travelers and mid-week business trips, ensuring flexibility for a variety of passengers.
Strategic Importance for Newcastle Airport
This new connection is a significant milestone for Newcastle Airport, which has been actively working to expand its international network. Berlin is one of Europe’s most vibrant cities, known for its rich history, iconic landmarks, and thriving arts and culinary scenes. The addition of this route enhances Newcastle’s connectivity and bolsters its appeal as a hub for leisure and business travelers.
Nick Jones, CEO of Newcastle Airport, expressed enthusiasm for the launch: “We’re delighted to welcome Eurowings to Newcastle and to introduce direct flights to Berlin. This is an important step in growing our route network and meeting the needs of our passengers.”
Boost for Tourism and Business
The new route is expected to drive tourism in both directions. Berlin attracts millions of visitors annually with its mix of cultural attractions, historical sites, and dynamic nightlife, while Newcastle offers its own array of cultural and natural attractions, such as the iconic Tyne Bridge and Northumberland’s scenic countryside.
For the business community, the direct flights provide an efficient link to one of Europe’s most influential economic centers. Berlin’s status as a hub for technology, media, and innovation makes the route particularly attractive to professionals and companies in the region.
Looking Ahead
Eurowings’ entry into Newcastle underscores the growing demand for more affordable and convenient connections to major European destinations. As Newcastle Airport continues to expand its network, passengers can look forward to more options for international travel in the years to come.
The launch of this route not only strengthens ties between Newcastle and Berlin but also highlights the recovery and growth of air travel post-pandemic.
