EasyJet has unveiled plans to expand its operations at Birmingham International Airport (BHX) with the addition of two new routes. Beginning in 2025, passengers will have direct access to Gran Canaria and Malta, further strengthening Birmingham’s connectivity to sought-after holiday destinations. This announcement comes as part of EasyJet’s broader strategy to enhance its presence in the West Midlands.

Route Details

The new routes include:

  • Birmingham (BHX) to Gran Canaria (LPA): Flights commence on May 2, 2025, with weekly service every Friday.
  • Birmingham (BHX) to Malta (MLA): Flights begin on June 3, 2025, operating every Tuesday.

Both routes will utilize EasyJet’s Airbus A320 aircraft, offering seating for up to 186 passengers. The schedules are designed to cater to leisure travelers, with departure times optimized for convenient weekend getaways and extended vacations.

Fares for these routes are already available, starting from £39.99 one way, ensuring affordability remains a key selling point for travelers in the region.

Expansion at Birmingham International Airport

With these additions, EasyJet now serves a total of 35 routes from Birmingham, reflecting its ongoing investment in the region. The airline’s recent winter schedule expansion includes new connections to Hurghada, Marrakesh, Reykjavik, Prague, and Krakow, offering both sun-soaked escapes and city breaks.

This growth comes as EasyJet bases additional aircraft at BHX to meet the increasing demand for international travel. In 2023, the airline carried over 19 million passengers across its network, with the West Midlands emerging as a significant growth area.

Ali Gayward, UK Country Manager for EasyJet, stated:
“We are delighted to announce these new routes, offering even more choice for our customers traveling from Birmingham. Whether they’re seeking winter sun or cultural city breaks, EasyJet continues to deliver convenient and affordable travel options.”

Boost to Regional Connectivity and Tourism

The addition of flights to Gran Canaria and Malta is expected to provide a boost to the local economy by encouraging inbound tourism and providing outbound travelers with more holiday options. Both destinations are popular among British holidaymakers for their Mediterranean charm, historic attractions, and favorable climates.

Gran Canaria offers year-round sunshine, making it a prime destination for beachgoers, while Malta’s rich history and vibrant cultural scene attract tourists seeking a blend of relaxation and exploration.

Competitive Positioning

This announcement underscores EasyJet’s commitment to maintaining its competitive edge in the low-cost carrier market. By focusing on popular destinations and strategically expanding at key regional hubs like Birmingham, the airline is positioning itself as a preferred choice for travelers across the UK.

Industry experts note that EasyJet’s expansion is well-timed to capitalize on increasing post-pandemic demand for air travel, particularly to leisure destinations. The airline’s decision to prioritize Birmingham aligns with its broader strategy to enhance its UK operations.

Looking Ahead

EasyJet’s new routes are part of a larger effort to reshape its network in response to evolving traveler preferences. With a focus on sustainability, the airline continues to invest in fuel-efficient Airbus A320neo aircraft, reducing emissions while maintaining cost-effective operations.

Passengers flying from Birmingham can look forward to an expanding array of destinations, as EasyJet remains committed to providing affordable, reliable, and convenient travel options.
