United Airlines has always offered a sizable number of nonstop Transatlantic routes, but that number is about to drastically increase during the Summer of 2022.
United Airlines will operate 80 routes between the U.S. and Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. That is 15 more than the pre-pandemic total of 65 from 2019. These numbers drastically dwarf their largest competitors (American Airlines and Delta Airlines), who have not rebounded in the Transatlantic space as strongly as United has.
New Routes : New Destinations
Six of the new routes that United Airlines will offer are “new” destinations for the airline, meaning they never operated them before. These destinations include: Amman, Bergen, Nice, Palma, Ponta Delgada, and Tenerife South.
Once the dust settles and the passenger numbers tell the whole story, it will be interesting to see how many of these routes are still operated, or return in 2023.
New Boston Routes
Boston to London Heathrow will operate 1x daily with the Boeing 767-300ER. This service began on April 15th and is technically a new route since it has not been operated in 20 years (last served October 2002).
New Chicago Routes
United Airlines will operate (2) new routes from Chicago O’Hare International Airport. These routes are:
1.) Chicago to Zurich operating 1x daily using the Boeing 767-300ER. This service began on April 23, 2022.
2.) Chicago to Milan Malpensa operating 1x daily using the Boeing 787-8. This service begins on May 6th.
New Newark Routes
The bulk of the new routes that United Airlines will fly this summer depart from their hub in Newark. These 5 new flights will operate to the following destinations:
1.) Newark to Nice operating 1x daily with the Boeing 767-300ER. This service begins on April 29th.
2.) Newark to Ponta Delgada operating 3x weekly with the Boeing 737 Max 8. This service begins on May 13th.
3.) Newark to Bergen operating 3x weekly with the Boeing 757-200ER. This service begins on May 20th.
4.) Newark to Palma operating 3x weekly with the Boeing 767-300ER. This service begins on June 2nd.
5.) Newark to Tenerife South operating 3x weekly with the Boeing 757-200ER. This service begins on June 9th.
New Washington Dulles Route
United Airlines will commence service from Washington Dulles to Amman 3x weekly using the Boeing 787-8. This service begins on May 3rd.
New Denver Route
United Airlines will operate between Denver and Munich 1x daily using the Boeing 787-9. This service began on April 23rd.
Why The New Flights to Amman?
Many people are sure to ask about the curious choice of adding a flight to Amman versus other destinations in the North African/Middle Eastern region. United announced their new service to Amman back in October, and it will be the second Middle East destination along with Tel Aviv.
The Washington Metro Area is actually the largest unserved market for point to point service to Amman, and with United having a hub presence in Dulles Airport, the solution was obvious.
The target market for this flight are people visiting friends and family, tourism, government travel, and for those traveling to nearby countries like Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, etc.
United Airlines fight UA525 will depart Washington Dulles at 22:00 and arrive in Amman the next day at 15:55. The return flight will be numbered UA526 and will depart Amman at 01:15 and arrive in Washington Dulles at 06:30.
Additional Flight Increases
In addition to these new routes, United Airlines will increase the frequency of many other Transatlantic routes.
1.) Newark to Dublin 2x daily (up from 1x daily)
2.) Denver to Heathrow 2x daily (up from 1x daily)
3.) Newark to Heathrow 7x daily (up from 5x daily)
4.) Washington to Accra 1x daily (up from 3x weekly)
5.) Newark to Frankfurt 2x daily (up from 1x daily)
6.) Newark to Rome 2x daily on five days (up from 1x)
7.) San Francisco to Heathrow 3x daily (up from 2x daily)
