United Airlines is significantly expanding its international footprint with the launch of new and enhanced routes aimed at meeting the growing demand for global travel. Starting October 24, 2024, United introduced service from its Newark (EWR) hub to Marrakesh, Morocco (RAK), while also boosting winter flight frequencies on major transpacific routes from Los Angeles (LAX). The Newark-Marrakesh service, operating three times weekly, utilizes United’s Boeing 767-300ER with a configuration that enhances passenger comfort on long-haul routes. The airline is also ramping up flights between Los Angeles and two key Asian hubs—Hong Kong (HKG) and Shanghai (PVG)—marking a substantial investment in the Asia-Pacific and African markets.

New Route to Marrakesh, Morocco

The Newark-Marrakesh service represents United’s first direct route to Morocco, enhancing accessibility to North Africa for U.S.-based travelers. With three weekly flights, this service is strategically timed to capture interest from both leisure travelers and business professionals interested in exploring Marrakesh’s unique culture and expanding economic landscape. This route also bolsters United’s position as a key player in international travel, especially to less conventional destinations in Africa.

The 767-300ER deployed on this route is configured to provide a balanced mix of Polaris business class, Premium Plus, and Economy Plus options, catering to various passenger needs. Polaris class passengers will enjoy fully lie-flat seats, direct aisle access, and premium in-flight services, making the long-haul journey more comfortable. Premium Plus offers enhanced legroom and upgraded meal options, while Economy Plus provides additional space, all supported by United’s advanced in-flight entertainment and connectivity options.

Expanded Los Angeles Transpacific Services

In addition to the Newark-Marrakesh route, United is significantly increasing its presence in the Asia-Pacific market. For the winter season, United will now offer two daily flights from Los Angeles to Hong Kong and daily flights from Los Angeles to Shanghai using its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. These expanded services respond to strong passenger demand and further integrate United’s Los Angeles hub with major Asian cities.

The Dreamliner’s advanced technology, including optimized cabin pressurization and quieter engines, makes it an ideal choice for transpacific routes. With its spacious and comfortable layout, the 787-9 Dreamliner is equipped to handle long-haul flights while maximizing fuel efficiency. Passengers on these routes benefit from the 787’s modern amenities, including lie-flat seats in Polaris business class, extra space in Premium Plus, and Economy Plus seating with larger overhead storage and enhanced meal service.

Strategic Impact on United’s Global Network

These new and expanded routes reinforce United Airlines’ strategy to strengthen its international network by focusing on destinations with high-growth potential. The Los Angeles to Hong Kong and Shanghai routes, in particular, are expected to attract both business and leisure travelers, especially given the economic importance of these cities in trade, finance, and tourism.

By adding Marrakesh to its route map, United is tapping into a unique market in North Africa, aligning with the airline’s broader objective of offering passengers access to a wider range of cultural and business hubs. As demand for international travel continues to grow, these new routes are well-positioned to capture market share, catering to U.S. travelers seeking both adventure and business opportunities in these diverse regions.

Bottom line

United Airlines’ new services underscore its commitment to expanding global connectivity, providing passengers with more direct options to explore popular and emerging international destinations.
