Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (VARA) is preparing to introduce a new charter fleet, with the first of eight Embraer E190-E2 jets set to arrive in October 2025. These aircraft will eventually replace the airline’s aging Fokker 100s and enhance its charter and FIFO (fly-in, fly-out) capabilities from its base in Perth, Western Australia.
First Deliveries Set for 2025
-
Aircraft: Embraer E190-E2
-
First deliveries: 4 aircraft within the first 12 months
-
Replaces: Fokker 100
-
Usage: Primarily FIFO charter flights, with flexibility for commercial service
Final assembly of the first aircraft began in March, and all eight jets will join the VARA fleet by late 2026. These aircraft will primarily serve remote mining routes across WA, where FIFO operations are essential to sustaining major gold, iron ore, and uranium mining projects located far from major cities.
New Cabin and Configuration Details
The aircraft will feature a dual-class configuration, with three product offerings:
-
Business Class
-
Economy X (extra legroom)
-
Standard Economy
All cabins will benefit from a 2-2 layout, eliminating middle seats and improving the passenger experience. Overhead bin space has been enhanced to ensure every guest can stow a bag, and the seats will offer more personal space than the outgoing Fokker 100s.
Connectivity and In-Flight Experience
Each aircraft will be equipped with:
-
High-bandwidth Wi-Fi
-
In-flight entertainment via personal devices
-
In-seat power outlets
Emissions and Jobs Boost
-
30% emissions reduction compared to the Fokker 100
-
Lower noise profile around airports
-
150 new WA-based jobs expected to be created across the VARA business over the next three years
According to Nathan Miller, VARA’s Executive GM, “We’ve had very positive feedback since announcing the acquisition of these aircraft. These will be the first brand-new aircraft in the WA charter market this century.”
The move also supports VARA’s long-term strategy of deploying more modern, efficient aircraft across both its charter and leisure markets, giving the carrier more operational flexibility, especially on lower-demand days when the E190-E2s can serve scheduled commercial routes.
