China Airlines has announced a strategic partnership with The New Terminal One at New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), marking a major shift in its North American operations and passenger experience. The Taiwanese carrier will relocate to the new facility in 2026, joining a growing list of international airlines embracing JFK’s multibillion-dollar transformation.
A Long-Term Commitment to JFK and North America
Currently operating four weekly flights between JFK and Taipei Taoyuan (TPE) with Boeing 777-300ERs, China Airlines sees this move as a cornerstone of its broader ambitions to grow in North America. JFK is one of China Airlines’ top international gateways and home to a large Taiwanese diaspora.
“We look forward to utilizing the latest technology to promote China Airlines and share the excitement of Taiwan with our customers,” said Kevin Chen, President of China Airlines.
The airline says the move to the New Terminal One will offer an enhanced passenger experience, including cutting-edge technology, elevated retail and dining, and seamless connectivity in and out of New York City.
What is The New Terminal One?
The New Terminal One is the centerpiece of the $19 billion overhaul of JFK, led by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Once complete in 2030, it will be JFK’s largest terminal at 2.6 million square feet, featuring 23 gates. The first phase—including 14 gates and new arrivals and departures halls—is expected to open in 2026, aligning with China Airlines’ relocation.
The terminal will ultimately replace the existing Terminals 1, 2, and 3, serving as the anchor on JFK’s south side. It also aims to achieve Top 5 Skytrax global terminal status, and will be built with union labor, emphasizing diversity and inclusion in contracting.
“With a shared commitment to delivering exceptional customer experiences, we look forward to a long-term partnership,” said Jennifer Aument, CEO of The New Terminal One.
SkyTeam Consolidation Continues
As a SkyTeam member, China Airlines will join Air France, KLM, Korean Air, and SAS at the New Terminal One, which is rapidly becoming a SkyTeam hub at JFK. Other carriers moving into the terminal include Etihad, Turkish Airlines, EVA Air, LOT, Air China, Philippine Airlines, Air Serbia, Royal Air Maroc, Neos, and Air New Zealand.
China Airlines’ Growing Footprint in North America
China Airlines currently flies to six destinations in North America, operating more than 40 weekly roundtrips from Taipei. The airline has also invested heavily in its fleet, customer service, and cargo operations. With nearly 500 weekly flights globally, it remains a major bridge for transpacific travelers.
“This is more than a new terminal—it’s about strengthening island connections and delivering extraordinary service,” said Chen.
In cargo, China Airlines serves 12 destinations in North America, and its cargo arm remains one of the most important in the region.
Bottom Line
China Airlines’ move to JFK’s New Terminal One is a major investment in the future of its North American operations. Set to launch in 2026, the move promises a modernized, tech-forward travel experience for passengers, while aligning China Airlines with a global community of top-tier international carriers. The partnership underscores JFK’s evolution into a world-class global gateway.
